From year 1960 onwards, the Association of Old Boys of PEC was known as PECOBA ( Punjab Engg College Old Boys Association) and its main activities were confined to holding AGM during Feb/March and its Life Membership Fee was automatic transfer of Students Store Funds to PECOBA. The activities were primarily limited to College teachers. This got impetus from year 1996 onward when Er Avtar Singh ( 1960 Civil Alumnus) Chief Engineer Punjab Irrigation Deptt was elected its President during AGM of 1996 for two years term of 1996-98.Since the number of girl students joining PEC and passing out as Alumni was quite large, it was considered expedient to broad-base the nomenclature of the Association to include both Boys & Girls and thus the name of the Association became PECOSA ( Punjab Engineering College Old Students Association) and the same was got registered as society under Registration of Firms & Societies Act XXI of 1860 with Registrar Firms & Societies Chandigarh with Regd No 2821 of 1998 on 08.12.1998. It (PECOSA) was also registered with Income Tax Deptt under section 12-A(a) of Income-tax Act 1961 vide Commissioner of Income-Tax Chandigarh vide memo No CIT/CHD/12A/54/Tech/5813 dated 3.11.2000 ( entered at No 67-P in the register of Application under section 12AA maintained in that office). PECOSA has been granted exemption u/s 80-G of Income-tax Act 1961 vide memo No CIT/CHD/Tech/80-G/47/Tech/5814 dated 3.11.2000 for period from 1.4.1998 to 31.3.2001 and same is being extended from time to time.
From the year 2009 onward it got further legitimacy when MOU ( Memorandum of Association) was signed with PEC University of Technology to expand its activities as enshrined in the Articles of Association of PECOSA. All students on passing out from PEC University of Technology become members of PECOSA as Life Membership Fee of Rs 500/- is being transferred by the University to PECOSA as per MOU.
